Nlfg is conducting its annual Christmas season food drive. If you are planning on attending a club function, please bring a non-perishable item with you. Our Thanksgiving food drive was a huge success. Everything that was donated went to the Chapel of the Cross.

The clubhouse will be closed Sunday, November 26th. We will reopen on Sunday, December 3rd.

The Club office will be open Sundays from noon until 2 pm for raffle ticket sales and 2024 dues payments.

There will be a Turkey shoot Sunday, December 10th. Doors open at 8, shooting starts at 9. Breakfast will be available. The next shoot will be December 17.

The Steel challenge shoots are finished for the season. Thanks to Don Bates and his crew of helpers and all the shooters who participated. Hope to see you all next year.

The indoor Archery and air rifle programs start up Sunday, November 5th. Hours are 11 am until 3 pm. This program is for kids of all ages who are interested in Archery. Details at nlfg.org.

NLFG hosted the first annual Veteran’s Day Garand Match on November 11, 2023. The CMP sanctioned the match, so competitors were able to earn official CMP awards according to their scores. The most important thing is that everyone had a really good time, and more people are visiting our spectacular rifle range! We had 3 non-members compete, and one additional spectator.

At the Membership meeting in November, we had our second round of nominations for officers for 2024. We had no nominations for Treasurer for 2024. There will, however, be an election for 2 one-year trustees since we have 3 candidates for these offices. If you are interested in being on the Board, let us know.

Traders Day will be Saturday, February 17th, from 9 to 1 at the Clubhouse. 15325 Lawmont Ave NW North Lawrence, OH 44666. 20 tables are available for rent. Only items allowed for sale are hunting, fishing, shooting sports, and sportsman’s related items. NO flea market goods. Tables are $20 each and are available for Club members only at this time. Want to do something to help the Club out? Something that won’t cost you anything and any of you can do. Sign up a new member. If you hear someone talking about Firearms, ask them where they shoot. Tell them about our club and bring them out and give them a tour of the place. Signing up new members will help keep membership costs down. If half of our members would sign up a new member, it would really help out.

2024 Dues payments, According to NLFG bylaws article VI item 3 “member dues must be paid by December 31st for the next year.” To facilitate this, we will be accepting dues payments on Sundays during office open hours. 5 gun law facts you should know before toking that first legal joint

Ohio voters overwhelmingly approved Issue 2 on Nov. 7, paving the way for the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state.

The law takes effect 30 days after Election Day, but it still has to go through a planning and rule-making process. Once it does take hold, gun owners should be aware of how the new law affects them before firing up that first joint.

Here are five facts you should know about your rights as a gun owner:

Marijuana is still illegal at the federal level. “Marijuana is a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act, meaning that it has a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision,” according to a fact sheet from the U.S. Department of Justice/Drug Enforcement Administration.
Federal law, 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(3), prohibits any person who is an “unlawful user of or addicted to any controlled substance as defined in section 102 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 802)” from shipping, transporting, receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition.
You should be very mindful of points 1 and 2 when purchasing a firearm and completing ATF Form 4473, which is used to conduct a background check. The form asks in question 21(f): “Are you an unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?” You might think you are a lawful user of marijuana, but pay close attention to the question’s next sentence: “Warning: The use or possession of marijuana remains unlawful under Federal law regardless of whether it has been legalized or decriminalized for medicinal or recreational purposes in the state where you reside.”
If you answer yes to question 21(f), you are “prohibited from receiving, possessing, or purchasing a firearm.”
If you falsely answer no to that question, you are in violation of federal law. As the form states, “I also understand that making any false oral or written statement, or exhibiting any false or misrepresented identification with respect to this transaction, is a crime punishable as a felony under Federal law …”

As we’ve stated, Buckeye Firearms Association doesn’t believe marijuana use should disqualify anyone from lawfully purchasing and/or owning a firearm.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit agrees. In August, the court unanimously ruled that the 1968 law is unconstitutional. The ruling in the case, United States v. Daniels, included comments from Circuit Judge Jerry E. Smith, a President Ronald Reagan appointee.

“Throughout American history, laws have regulated the combination of guns and intoxicating substances. But at no point in the 18th or 19th century did the government disarm individuals who used drugs or alcohol at one time from possessing guns at another.”

Smith said some limits historically have been placed on an intoxicated person’s right to carry a weapon, …

but it does not justify disarming a sober citizen based exclusively on his past drug usage. Nor do more generalized traditions of disarming dangerous persons support this restriction on nonviolent drug users. As applied to Daniels, then, § 922(g)(3) violates the Second Amendment. We reverse the judgment of conviction and render a dismissal of the indictment.

Patrick Daniels had been arrested in spring 2022 after a traffic stop in Mississippi in which a DEA officer found marijuana butts and two loaded firearms in his vehicle. Daniels was not administered a drug test, nor was he asked if he was under the influence, according to Smith’s ruling.

You may remember this was the federal statute that led to Hunter Biden’s indictment.

Before you get your hopes too high on that ruling, understand that it is limited to Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.

The M1 Garand was made in large numbers during World War II; approximately 5.4 million were made. They were used by every branch of the United States military. The rifle generally performed well. General George S. Patton called it “the greatest battle implement ever devised.” The typical opponent of a US soldier during World War II was usually armed with a slower-firing bolt-action rifle (e.g. the Karabiner 98k for Germany, the Carcano M1891 for Italy, and the Type 38 or Type 99 Arisaka rifle for Japan). The impact of faster-firing infantry small arms, in general, soon stimulated both Allied and Axis forces to greatly increase their issue of semi- and fully automatic firearms then in production, as well as to develop new types of infantry firearms.

In 1998, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) inaugurated the John C. Garand Match and, with it, an exciting new concept in target competition. The Garand Match is a unique competition where shooters fire older “as-issued” military rifles over a course of fire that makes target shooting attractive to the average shooter. The availability of surplus M1 and other older military rifles makes target shooting accessible to thousands of shooters, many of whom do not participate in traditional target competitions. The Garand Match allows shooters to reenact military and marksmanship history and features camaraderie and a relaxed, fun-filled, yet challenging experience.
